Product Description:
What is The Big One® without Iron?
The Big One® without Iron is a high-potency, one-per-day multivitamin/mineral capsule containing key nutrients at optimal levels. Although it provides a strong foundational range of nutrients to fill nutritional gaps in your diet, The Big One® without Iron can also be combined with additional supplements to further individualize your supplemental regimen. The Big One® without Iron is recommended for men, post-menopausal women, or those who have lower iron requirements or a high dietary intake of iron. All three Big One® formulas contain the highest quality activated nutrients with no non-nutritive additives.
This formula features highly bioavailable, methylated forms of folate (L-methylfolate) and B-12 (methylcobalamin), phosphorylated forms of riboflavin and B-6, chelated minerals, natural mixed carotenoids, and natural vitamin E.
How does The Big One® without Iron Work?
This multivitamin contains a variety of antioxidants with diverse contributions to healthy cellular function and repair. Antioxidants play an important role in the neutralization of oxidative stress, and antioxidant deficiency is a known cause of numerous chronic and degenerative pathologies [1]. Vitamin E (α-tocopherol) is a fat-soluble vitamin with high antioxidant potency, that protects cell membranes [1]. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a water-soluble, antioxidant vitamin that is essential for collagen, carnitine, and neurotransmitter biosynthesis. Vitamin C works synergistically with vitamin E. Vitamin A (beta-carotene) is a fat-soluble and essential nutrient for vision. Vitamin A is converted to retinol, which is required for the proper function of the retina, the growth of and differentiation of epithelial tissue, the growth of bone, reproduction, and the immune response [2]. It is also a strong antioxidant and is the best quencher of singlet oxygen [1].
Vitamin D-3, cholecalciferol, is the same form of vitamin D that animals make in response to sunlight. Vitamin D deficiency is a common problem, as research on skin health discourages individuals from spending time exposed to sunlight. However, vitamin D is necessary for the maintenance of bone health and calcium homeostasis [3], and deficiency is linked with osteoporotic bone loss, increased bone fractures, autoimmune disease, and neurodegenerative disorders [4]. Vitamin K has been shown to aid in the maintenance of healthy bones by regulating calcium uptake in bone tissue, increasing new bone formation, and reducing bone resorption [5]. Zinc, manganese, and boron also support bone mineralization [6]. Chromium is an essential trace element that plays an important role in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Chromium deficiency has been linked to insulin resistance and diabetes, and oral supplementation with chromium has been found to reverse these effects [7]. Studies show chromium may also benefit muscle building [7].
Selenium (Se) is a trace mineral that helps to activate several antioxidant enzymes and is a known immunomodulator, along with vitamins A and D. Selenium is also necessary for proper thyroid function [1]. Iodine is also essential to thyroid health, as it is a necessary element in the synthesis of thyroid hormone [8].
B vitamins contained in this supplement blend; thiamine, riboflavin, niacinamide, B-6, biotin, pantothenic acid, folate, and B-12, are commonly associated with energy production, nervous system maintenance, and cardiovascular health. Thiamine, riboflavin, niacinamide, B-6, biotin, and pantothenic acid are cofactors for enzymes needed for cellular energy production through the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Thiamine, folate, B-12 are involved in neural development and neurotransmitter synthesis [9]. The type of B-12 contained in this supplement is the activated, naturally occurring form of cobalamin found in food, methylcobalamin. Many supplements contain cyanocobalamin, which is completely synthetic and not as well-retained as the methylcobalamin found in our formula. Methylfolate and B-6 are required for homocysteine metabolism and have been linked to mood improvement [10]. About half of the population cannot properly process the synthetic form of folate (folic acid), so taking a supplement that contains its activated form is a superior choice for increasing the availability of circulating methylfolate.
